Rethinking PM-KUSUM

Jul 22, 2026

As India crosses 162 GW of installed solar capacity, the next frontier of its clean energy transition lies in reaching the last mile empowering farmers and delivering reliable energy access to regions where conventional infrastructure remains challenging. In his latest article for ETGovernment "Rethinking PM-KUSUM: Why community-owned solar irrigation is the key to ending water poverty," Mr. Deepak Gupta IAS (Retd), Director General, NSEFI - National Solar Energy Federation of India, highlights how community-owned solar irrigation can serve as a transformative solution at the intersection of energy, water, and agriculture. By enabling decentralized, community-driven irrigation systems, the model has the potential to improve water accessibility, strengthen farmer livelihoods, enhance climate resilience, and advance the objectives of PM-KUSUM and Viksit Bharat 2047.
